Get and Create Your Own Website
by Derek Ayre

Getting and creating website may sound quite daunting, but if money is a problem,  there are plenty of companies giving away for free webspace in exchange for you opening a free account with them.  With Yahoo, you have Geocities.  Just go along to geocities.yahoo.com and sign up for your free account. You can also sign up with a free internet service provider (ISP) like freeserve (now www.orange.co.uk) is one I’ve used for several years now. You will need to choose a user-name and password and I would suggest that you use something that is linked to the content of your site.  I have two sites. Being a hypnotherapist, I have one user name hypno-ayre, so my sites becomes www.hypno-ayre.freeserve.co.uk. And this site, my writing site, I have got a user name of derek-write, so my site address is www.derek-write.fsnet.co.uk. So there you have it. A free site with a name to indicate what it is all about. But.... if you prefer to go for a domain name and/hosting try here.

You will then need to install a dialer. If you are using orange.co.uk already, you will not need a dialer, as you can just upload your webpages to the site using your existing connection, whether is be dial-up or broadband. If you using another ISP however, you will need a dialer* set up to go through the ISP as this is how orange.co.uk make their money from your dial-up internet calls.  I must say, I have always found this ISP to be very stable and it has never let me down.
*A dialer is a small program installed on your computer that will connect through the server using your modum that is connected to a normal phone socket.

You will then need some webpage creation software. There are some good free ones about, but I usually found them to have one or two errors, so I opted to purchase one called Namo Web Editor [Namo Web Editor (USA)] (click for more information) and found it to be free of bugs and very easy to use very much like a word processor..

Then you will need something else, to upload your programs to your website. That is an FTP program.  FTP stands for file transfer protocol – which simply means it’s a program that sends your finished webpages to the Internet. The one I use and find really easy to use is Trellian FTP. When you open the program you are faced with two adjacent windows. One window on the left containing the files on your hard drive, which you will need to search through to find your finished webpages,  and the window on the right is where you connect to the webspace you have with your server.  Here you will need to fill in your host's address (available on your host's website) and then enter your username and password. Click connect, and you will connect to your website. You then need to transfer your webpages and all linking images etc. from your hard drive on to your webspace, by clicking on the arrows (>>). The files on your computer do not disappear when you do this, but a duplicate copy is sent across.

What I have given you here if a brief outline on creating your website and getting it on line, but if you have any questions, please   to email me and I will do my best to help you.

So to summarise, to create your own website you will need…

Webspace – recommend you sign up with geocities.yahoo.com  (you won't need a dialer for geocities as all transfer is done on line) or sign up with www.orange.co.uk and download their dialer, or broadband connection.

  • Webpage creation software. (recommend Namo, easy especially for beginners. Feel free to e-mail me if you get stuck).
  • You will need a FTP program – There are some free ones about, but I recommend Trellian. Reasonably priced and immediately down-loadable.
  1. Create your webpages with your webpage creation software and save them to disk
  2. Open your FTP program follow instructions by entering all details of your webspace host and upload your pages. (Don't forget you will need to dial-up if you are using a different server)

life insurance
web site
critical illness insurance
online mortgages

Domain Names (to buy or not to buy)
Then there's domain names and web-hosting. For my other site, Ayre Hypnotherapy I have a UK domain name from UK2 that, in my opinion, makes it much more visible to search engines. When my site is clicked on, it goes to a linking page, that takes the user to my freeserve site when I have all my pages. Click here for UK2's banner. I think you will find they have a range of cheap deals for "name only" or full hosting packages..
