Freecom Classic DVD Rewriter

I’ve owned my external Freecom DVD Rewriter for some time now, and it has given me excellent service, even though I have “hammered” it, burning DVD after DVD of years of stockpiled home video footage. Time after time, I have had great results with just one unsuccessful burn, but that was a faulty disk –which happens sometimes.

When I went in search of a DVD Re-writer, I was very tempted by getting an internal one to save desk-space and they were cheaper. But after some consideration I opted for the external because we have two computers and a laptop and it’s just a question of plugging it in to the USB port of any machine I want to work with.  Because it also plays DVD movies, it makes it really handy when I am having that long week-end staying at relatives and there’s nothing to watch on TV. I can simply plug it into my laptop and watch any DVD movie of my choice.

The Freecom DVD Rewriter can also burn dual layer DVDs which means that, you can get almost double the amount of movies (i.e. up to 85.GB) on one Dual Layer disk, but they do tend to cost a little more than the standard DVD disks.

Another thing that is useful regarding this drive, is that using Nero (that was packaged with the drive), I can back up any computer file I wish to DVD and this gives me 4.7GB (that is 4,812.8 megabytes) of storage on a DVD disk in comparison to 700 MB (megabytes) that can be stored on CD-R or RWs.  So as you can imagine, I now have fewer worries of losing my files should my hard drive decide to die on me.

I have been amazed at the way the price of the DVD burners have come down in price over the years. When I first became interested in burning DVD, I was looking at forking out £200+ for one, but now they can be found from between £40 and £90 for various models from various dealers found around the internet (see dealer banners on this page)

In summary: Having owned an external CD-RW from Freecom (from the days before my PC came with an internal CD-RW fitted, that is still going strong, I can strongly recommend the Freecom products that I have always found to be dead easy to use by simply plugging into the port. Drivers come with the item, but I found it worked straightaway with Windows XP.

The specs of my DVD-RW model are…

Read Speed = 16x (DVD), 48x (CD)
Write Speed = 48x (CD), 16x (DVD+R), 16x (DVD-R), 4x (DVD+R DL)
Re-Write Speed = 24x (CD-RW), 4x (DVD+RW), 4x (DVD-RW)
It works on USB2 (or backwards compatible to USB1 but slower) interface and supports - CD-R • CD-RW • DVD-R • DVD+R • DVD+RW • DVD+R DL (Double Layer) • DVD-RW
