Google:
Most of us are familiar with Google's excellent ability as a search engine, but did you know that it can be used for much more? Well it can be used as...

A calculator:  For instance, if you type in the search box, 10+10*10 (i.e. 10 plus 10 time 10). that would give a correct answer of 110.   The * is multiply, the + is plus, the - is minus, / is divide.  Another useful function of the Google calculator is its ability to convert quantities by entering (for example 10) miles in kilometres in to the search box and it will come up with a conversion to 16.09344 kilometers..  For full explanation of calculator on Google, click here.

Google can also be used to define words. For instance, if you were to type into the search box, define: HTML (ensure the colon : is entered after the word define though), Google would come up with a list of sites with definitions of HTML - which incidentally stands for HyperText Markup Language. It's not just computer jargon that can be defined, but also you.

Typing weather followed by the name of your city into the search bar will bring up a list of weather sites for you local area.

Microsoft Excel:
If ever you wanted to find out what day a certain date was on, Microsoft Excel can help. The day of the week of any date could produced in any cell you wished in the document with the following formula... =text(cell ID, "dddd").  For example, say you heard somebody was born on 3rd December 1923 and you were curious to know what day of the week this was. Simple enter the date 03/12/1923 in cell (for instance B1) and then =text(a2,"dddd") in cell A1.  This would give your answer in cell A1 as Monday followed by 03/12/1923 in B1.

To copy a screen/window into a document (as I have done above):
First of all, activate the window you want to print/copy by clicking on it, next press and hold the ALT key and press Print Screen on your keyboard. Then paste the image into a document (e.g. Word or Web page editor) by clicking the Edit menu in the document window, and then click Paste or use a keyboard shortcut by pressing and holing Ctrl and pressing the V key - this process is also known as Screen Dump.

Security on your computer
When my computer experiences started back in the early 80s, I really felt that here was an appliance that was going to make my writing work so very much easier. Then as time went by and I progressed from a stand-alone computer to one that was connected to the internet, I found that I needed to “service” my PC just as much, if not more than it was “servicing” me -  especially with all the threat of viruses, security and privacy. Now, I think I have got on top of the problem at last after having installed, anti-virus software, adware and spyware blockers. Something I give little thought to 10 years ago is something now I would never dream of going on-line without!

Putting the obvious threat of the computer virus to one side for a moment, during my searches on the net, I have been really surprised to learn that only a fraction of computer users are using kind of adware and spyware blockers software and whatsmore, it is thought that around 90% of machines are infected with with adware and spyware. And these little “beasties” can harm your computer just as much and in some cases your credit card details can be stolen by a hacker.

So where does the threat come from?
Mostly hidden, spyware and adware  files and are downloaded as you browse the Internet. They tend to come from pop up ads, shareware & freeware (free downloadable programs) and these days even instant messaging.  And the story doesn't end there... Some machines contain them when your first purchase them!

Blocking Adware & Spyware
In my opinion, the best thing to do is to avoid getting adware and spyware in the first place and get a good spyware blocker. Some people seem happy to use the many freeware programs available from various websites, but personally I prefer to pay for a program.

Click Here (UK) or Click Here [USA] if like me you feel more comfortable to pay for anti-spyware package. If you are happy with freeware click here - Click here to check out XoftSpy - in my opinion one of the best anti-spyware programs on the net.

Recording Vinyl & Tapes to Computer
Using a program called Music Match Jukebox, I have recently recorded all my vinyl records to my computer in the form of MP3 files and then burned them on to CD.. Click here to read how I did it.
