Security on Line

Apart from picking up viruses and spyware, there is also a risk of identity fraud on line. To someone considering purchasing a computer to make it easier to shop, bank, send and communicate by sending receiving emails, the Internet may seem like a "dangerous place" full of thieves waiting to pounce and relieve one of one's hard-earned cash.  But really it's no different to what can happen when one's off-line. Several years ago,  I received my credit card bill with and extra £800 added to my purchases. But that had not happened on line. My details had either been stolen when I handed it over in a restaurant of fuel station. And it was probably my own fault for letting it out of my sight. Fortunately, the credit card company had an insurance policy and my account was reimbursed with the £800.

Yes, there are thieves who use the internet and would steal your card details and identity if they were able. It is up to you to ensure they don't by...

  • Keeping your Anti-virus software up to date
  • Installing a firewall - I prefer to use Mcafee, but there are free ones about if you do a search on google.com.
  • Only entering your card details on a website that is secure. Look for the little padlock in the bottom bar and the address bar usually begins with "https//www...." and not just the "http://"www.
  • Never, ever respond to emails that say you need to go to your (.e.g.) bank or Ebay website and update your details and/or password for any reason whatsoever. In fact, never click on connections in unsolicited emails to websites that require secure sign-ins at all. Banks (including on-line banks like Paypal never email their customers in this way. If you are uncertain sign into your Paypal account directly from your browser, by typing in the URL (web address) into the address bar so that you know you are on the genuine site. Or in the case of your ordinary bank, telephone your branch as ask them if they have contacted you. You usually find that the answer is no.

I look at it is this way. I would not leave a pile of cash on the seat of my car. By going about your on-line activities without up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall, is the same as leaving valuables on the back seat of your car for all and sundry to see. A thief is bound to come along in time to take advantage of it.

There is another problem  that computer users have to deal and that is spyware and adware. These program-files downloaded whilst you are looking at webpages. For more information on this click here to read my article.
