Writing for Profit on the Internet

Writing for profit on the Internet is not as easy as some would have you believe. But from my experience, I have had more success earning a few bob than I did when I was sending off manuscripts to publishers in exchange for rejection slips that I could paper my walls with!
I remember those clichéd words from the writing tutor, “don’t give up your day-job” and “don’t take rejection personally.” But what is one to do? I did take it personally. As far as I was concerned (and, without getting big-headed about it, quite often my teacher), I had crafted a masterpiece well worthy of the publication I was targeting and they didn’t want it! Unfortunately, in those early days, the Internet was in its infancy. And people were telling me that it would never take off. That people would always want a real book and would not want to be reading off a screen. Whilst that may be true to a certain extent even now, things have changed. With modern TFT screens hand held computers, many people do read off the screen, but heck! most have printers these days, so there is a choice.
Getting published is easier on line as many websites and newsletters are willing to publish your articles if they are well written and targeted at their readership, but you rarely get payment for your efforts. One of the best ways of promoting yourself, is to create a free e-book and simply give it away. You may now be wondering where the profit in that is. Well, with the correct software, you can create e-books that can be read by Windows Acrobat Reader, and in that e-book, you can place you can place links that take the reader to a website you could sign up with an affiliate to. One of the easiest, affiliations are to Amazon.co.uk and/or Amazon.com (USA). I am an affiliate to both and any paying traffic I send their way, I get commission on. OK, it’s no fortune, but once your links are in your e-books, what if hundreds of people were to have it on their computers as it is past from person to person. But, for that to happen, you have to make it interesting and useful. So first of all, you have to find something to write.
Write what you know first. Try to follow this formula…
1. Write a list of all the things you know that would be of value to your potential readers.
2. Go to Amazon and sign up as an affiliate
3. Search for books and/or software that is associated with the content of your e-book.
4. Sign into your affiliate account and get html links for associated products (they will automatically include you affiliate name).
5. Place the links in your e-book (maybe under the heading of “suggested further reading”).
6. Advertise your e-book and give it away. Allow recipients of your e-book to give it away to others if they wish. This can start off something called Viral Marketing as it spreads across the Internet.
The benefit of a give-away e-book are.
- It can be an added attraction if you already have a website.
- Can link directly to your website
- Can link directly to any site you are affiliated can creating profit for you.
- People love to get things for free and if you ensure the information you have in your e-book is of value and not just advertising, it may be shared with more and more people getting you and your business better known.
